It was the early days of September, and the city of New York was buzzing with the anticipation of the annual New York Comic Con. Among the throngs of excited fans were two cosplayers, Fiona "The Foamy" Flanigan and her best friend, Mortimer "The Mole" Muffin. Together, they had set out to create the ultimate cosplays for the con, but little did they know, their journey into the world of armor crafting with EVA foam and Worbla would lead to an adventure filled with absurdity and laughter.
Fiona and Mortimer had decided to bring to life two iconic characters from a popular fantasy series: Fiona as the fearsome Draconic Dragoness and Mortimer as the stealthy Shadow Serpent. The armor was to be their masterpiece, a blend of fierce dragon scales and sleek serpent coils, respectively.
Fiona had never worked with EVA foam or Worbla before, but her YouTube research and a few helpful tips from a friend at Comic-Con had set her on the path of armor crafting. She started by cutting out precise shapes of EVA foam to form the dragon scales, and then coating them with Worbla to give them that shiny, metallic look. The result was impressive, but the foam pieces, cut too thin, began to warp when she applied the Worbla, leading to an ensemble that resembled a cross between a dragon and a deflated balloon.
Mortimer, on the other hand, focused on precision cutting of EVA foam to create the serpentine scales of his character. However, in his hurry to get the details right, he had forgotten to wear eye protection, and a stray piece of foam flew into his eye during the cutting process. Mortimer, now with a gooey eye and foam chunks stuck in his hair, resembled an animated version of a frightened lizard more than a shadowy serpent.
Despite their setbacks, Fiona and Mortimer pressed on, determined to make their cosplays as magnificent as promised. They decided to test their creations at a local convention, hoping to fine-tune their armor before the big event. Little did they know, this decision would unleash a series of events that would become a legendary tale among cosplayers.
At the local convention, Fiona and Mortimer received mixed reactions. Some attendees were amazed by their dedication and the intricate details of their armor, while others, noticing the warping and the foam chunks, laughed and pointed, thinking they were part of a comedy sketch team that had infiltrated the convention.
The real trouble began when Fiona’s dragon armor started to peel off in chunks as she moved. The adhesive had failed, and her dragon scales began to rain down around her like autumn leaves, leaving her in an ensemble that looked more like a half-completed construction kit. To top it all off, Mortimer’s Worbla-coated foam had started to melt slightly from the heat, causing him to resemble a melted chocolate statue.
To make matters even more absurd, as they were trying to fix Fiona’s armor in the convention’s restroom, a mischievous fellow cosplayer, dressed as a robot janitor, started to vacuum up Fiona’s falling scales. The scene that unfolded was a chaotic mix of foam scales flying, Mortimer's half-melted armor, and the robot janitor making off with Fiona’s “treasure.”
Unbeknownst to them, their antics had captured the attention of a local news station documenting the convention. A live segment featured Fiona’s falling armor and Mortimer’s eye-goo, complete with interviews where they explained their crafting mishaps.
By the time they arrived at New York Comic Con a week later, Fiona and Mortimer had become local celebrities. Their armor, now fully repaired and even more elaborate with additional details, garnered much admiration from cosplayers and attendees alike. Fiona’s dragon scales were now beautifully layered and Mortimer’s serpent coils were seamless, thanks to the invaluable experience they gained from their earlier troubles.
Their journey into the world of armor crafting had not only resulted in some hilarious mishaps but also in a bond that no amount of foam or Worbla could break. They were no longer just Fiona and Mortimer but The Foamy and The Mole, the unconventional champions of cosplay, who taught everyone that sometimes, the most memorable cosplays are born out of unexpected problems.
