It was a blistering summer day in San Diego, 2018. The annual Comic-Con was in full swing, and the atmosphere was electric, filled with the vibrant energy of people from all walks of life gathered to celebrate their love for anime and video games. Among these was a cosplay group known as the "Sword and Salad Crew," consisting of a diverse group of friends who had bonded over their shared passion for cosplay and all things quirky and silly.
The leader of the group was a woman named Sally Salad, known for her elaborate prop designs and her infectious laugh. She was joined by her friends: IronBob, a burly man in a giant suit of armor, who specialized in heavy weaponry; Lisa Li'lbit, a pint-sized anime cosplayer with a surprising amount of sass; and Finn Fumble, a guy who took cosplay to ridiculous extremes.
Sally Salad's latest creation was a massive, intricately crafted prop sword, designed for her new cosplay of a character from the wildly popular Japanese-RPG called "Warriors of the Salad Garden." The sword was so large that Sally needed help just to carry it around. Lisa Li'lbit joked, "Sally, with that sword, you could be the ultimate protector of all the produce!"
The group had planned to attend a Cosplay Contest called "The Grand Melee," where they would showcase their costumes in a theatrical battle against other cosplayers. The theme was "Loot and Legends," encouraging elaborate costumes and props. As Sally carried her enormous prop sword into the convention center, she couldn't help but feel a little overwhelmed by its size.
"I can't believe I agreed to drag this thing around," Sally panted, her face reddening under the layers of her costume. "It's like carrying a small car."
"Hey, you wanted the ultimate sword, and you got it!" IronBob said, cracking jokes as he adjusted his armor. "Now, let's show them what a Salad Warrior can do!"
The contest was set up in a large hall, with a stage and a panel of judges. Teams would enter, showcase their costumes, and demonstrate their props in a mock battle. Sally's heart raced as she watched other teams come and go. Some had beautifully crafted weapons, others had innovative mechanical designs, but no one had a prop quite as large as Sally's.
Just before it was their turn, Sally and her group took a moment to regroup in a quiet hallway. "Okay, guys, let's make this count," Sally said, trying to sound confident but secretly nervous about carrying her sword on stage.
"Remember, this is just for fun," Lisa Li'lbit said, giving Sally a thumbs up. "And if you drop the sword, at least it'll be a great joke!"
"Right, because dropping a sword made of foam and cardboard is the funniest thing ever," Sally muttered under her breath.
Finally, it was their turn to perform. Sally Salad and the Sword and Salad Crew walked onto the stage to raucous applause. The camera lights flickered ominously, and Sally suddenly felt a bit dizzy from the heat and the weight of her prop.
"Sally, you hold the front, we'll distract with the rest," IronBob whispered, positioning himself behind Sally.
They began their routine, with Sally brandishing her huge prop sword. The crowd cheered as she swung it around, but the weight was taking its toll. Sweat dripped down Sally's face as she struggled to maintain her balance. IronBob and Lisa tried to make it look like they were fighting an invisible foe, but it was clear they were also trying not to laugh at Sally’s plight.
Suddenly, with a loud thud, Sally's sword dropped out of her hands, landing with a crash that seemed to echo throughout the convention center. For a moment, there was silence, then the crowd erupted into laughter. Sally stood there, embarrassed but also finding herself joining in the laughter.
"I’m sorry, I guess this thing is just too heavy for me," Sally said, picking up the sword with some difficulty.
The judges, clearly enjoying the performance, decided to give them a score based on creativity and humor rather than accuracy. As they walked off the stage, Sally said to her friends, "Well, at least it was memorable."
The Sword and Salad Crew didn't win first place, but they did win the hearts of the audience for their unique and amusing performance. Sally later joked that her sword could now be repurposed as a garden stake since it had fallen so gracefully during the contest.
After the event, Sally decided to lighten up her prop sword for future appearances. She vowed to never again carry something so cumbersome on stage but was proud of her effort. The Sword and Salad Crew left the convention with stories and memories that would last a lifetime.
In the end, Sally learned an important lesson: sometimes, comedy is the best result, even when things go awry. And for Sally Salad and her friends, that was more than enough to keep them coming back to Comic-Con, year after year, with bigger and sillier props.
And so, the Sword and Salad Crew lived on, roaming the convention circuit, their adventures and mishaps turning them into local legends in the cosplay community. The next time Sally brought out her revised prop, she had IronBob and Lisa on standby, ready to catch it if needed, a testament to their friendship and the never-serious nature of their cosplay adventures.
